PN Series is a putty-type, hydrophilic rubber waterstrip made from a rubber compound blended with water-swelling additives. It sits flat on the face of a concrete construction joint, bonded either by its own adhesive backing or held with nails, and does nothing at all until groundwater or seepage reaches it. On contact with water, the rubber absorbs moisture and swells — expanding into the pores, honeycombing and micro-gaps that ordinary concrete pours leave behind, and generating contact pressure against the surrounding concrete as it does.
That reactive, gap-filling behavior is what separates it from a mechanical waterstop. A PVC waterstop works whether or not it ever meets water: its ribbed profile is cast into the middle of the pour and physically blocks the path length. A water-swelling waterstrip only starts working once water actually shows up — which also means it can reseal itself around small settlement cracks that appear later, something a rigid PVC profile cannot do on its own.
Because the seal depends on confinement, PN Series is built for joints where movement is minimal: horizontal and vertical construction joints (also called cold joints), pipe and sleeve penetrations, and connections between precast elements. It is not a substitute for a PVC expansion joint waterstop in a joint designed to move.
Choose PN Series for straightforward construction/cold joints with no designed movement — wall-to-footing joints, pour-to-pour joints in basement slabs, and around pipe penetrations.
Choose a PVC waterstop (see the BC or SO Series) where the joint is expected to expand, contract or shift, since those joints need a mechanical barrier that keeps working through movement, not just contact pressure.
The sequence is straightforward on site. Once the first concrete pour cures, the joint face is cleaned back to sound concrete and the PN strip is fixed along the centerline of the joint — self-adhesive backing for most horizontal and vertical runs, with steel nails or a wooden batten adding mechanical hold on rough or vertical surfaces. The strip is kept dry and protected until the second pour fully encases it.
Groundwater or seepage that later reaches the joint triggers the swelling reaction: the rubber compound absorbs water and expands, generating contact pressure against the confining concrete on both sides. Because the strip is compressed inside the joint rather than free to expand outward, that pressure is what closes off the leak path — including the small voids and surface irregularities that a mechanical waterstop profile alone can't conform to.
This is also why premature wetting is the main installation risk: a strip that swells before the second pour encases it loses cross-section and bond area, and can leave the joint under-sealed. Keeping the strip dry until casting is the single most important step in the whole installation.

As an alternative or complement to embedded PVC waterstop strips, PN Series is widely specified anywhere a construction joint needs to stay dry over the long term.
After the first concrete pour cures, clean the joint interface back to sound concrete — remove scum, laitance and loose debris with a wire brush, then wipe or rinse the surface. It can be dry or slightly damp, but standing water must be removed.
Position the strip along the centerline of the joint, in the direction the joint runs. Peel back the release paper progressively for self-adhesive strips and press firmly with even pressure. On vertical faces or rough substrates, add steel nails to hold the strip in place until casting.
Never butt two strip ends together. Overlap ends by at least 50 mm, and bevel-cut or compress the overlap to keep a smooth, continuous cross-section with no gaps at the joint.
Keep the installed strip protected from rain and construction water until the second pour encases it. Premature swelling reduces bond area and cross-section, and is the leading cause of installation failure.
Place and consolidate concrete around the strip without direct vibrator contact against it. Full encasement on all sides is what allows the strip to develop confined swelling pressure once it eventually contacts water.
